Prohibition Era Diamond Patterned Amber Rittenhouse Whiskey Bottle

Good Friday to you all and thanks for joining me here.

Isn’t it strange how things can seem to go in waves?  For instance, lately as I’ve been pickin’ for the Vintage and Antique side of my shop I’ve come across a number of glass items such as a unique pint milk bottle, three manganese purple perfume bottles, two Hollywood Regency crystal cut glass boudoir lamps positively dripping with gorgeous prisms and now – this amazing, heavy glass bottle from the Prohibition Era.

Prohibition in the United States was a nationwide constitutional ban on the production, importation, transportation, and sale of alcoholic beverages from 1920 to 1933. Some alcoholic beverages were allowed by prescription and the religious use of wine was permitted.

I can only imagine the number of “prescriptions” issued during this time, ha, ha,.  (Kind of sounds familiar, though, doesn’t it?)

This bottle bears the Federal warning that was issued at the time of Prohibition “Federal Law Forbids Sale or Re – Use Of This Bottle” .

But also look at the beauty of this bottle, not only is it incredibly thick glass it is heavily decorated with a deeply embossed diamond pattern and also has an embossed coat of arms making this a Rittenhouse Straight Bourbon Whiskey bottle.

This is a rare find and thanks to the sturdiness of the bottle it is in quite good condition for its age.

On the base of the bottle is the following embossing: (in a ring) Continental Distilling Corp. Philadelphia PA. Within the ring is: D – 18 (and) 39 – 40.
